General:

Education for the blind since the inauguration of the first blind academy has been focused on assisting young blind students and helping them achieve skills to succeed in society. Due to biases about the capabilities of the blind, the focus was specifically on learning a trade. Trades ranged from rug making, brush making, broom making, chair-caning, and basket weaving being a handful of popular ones throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Minnesota State Academy for the Blind (MSAB):

MSAB throughout its history has focussed on a variety of different trades. Baskets were a large part of the trade culture at MSAB, with many student-made baskets still existing at MSAB.
